Occupational Therapy: Definition & Treatment
What is Occupational Therapy?
Many people believe that occupational therapy focuses on ones profession or job training, but occupation is a term which means “an activity in which one engages”. Occupational therapy helps rehabilitate the physical or mental aspect of the body through performance of required daily activities. It promotes confidence and supports people of all ages to live better, healthier lives in order to regain the skills needed for daily activities. A licensed occupational therapist administers occupational therapy.
What does Occupational Therapy Treat?
Occupational therapy is used to treat any person with an injury, illness, or disability. It is a specialized program to assist people of all ages who can’t lead productive, independent lives due physical, developmental, social and/or emotional problems. Occupational therapists use this method to work on and break down barriers for the patient in order for them to be more independent in the world.
How is Occupational Therapy Administered?
During a visit with the occupational therapist, you can expect a full physical and mental evaluation to determine the goal of therapy. Once a diagnosis is reached, the therapist will set and manage a plan of care. The occupational therapist will intervene and create an environment for the patient to perform daily activities and reach their goal.
