Compartment Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

What Is Compartment Syndrome?

Compartment syndrome describes a group of muscles, nerves, and blood vessels that are experiencing excessive pressure and fluid build up in the arm or leg.  The fascia, connective tissue, helps to hold all of these compartments in our body together.  Excessive pressure from an injury could be pressing on the compartment causing decreased blood flow to and from the nerves and muscles.  Compartment Syndrome can be either acute or chronic, is a medical emergency, and is usually caused by a sever injury.  If compartment syndrome is not treated it can lead to permanent muscle damage.

Compartment Syndrome Causes

  1. Fracture
  2. Burn
  3. Severely bruised muscles
  4. Crush injuries
  5. Anabolic steroid use
  6. Overly tight bandaging
  7. Blood clot in the arm or leg
  8. Surgery in blood vessels or arm or leg

Compartment Syndrome Symptoms

Compartment syndrome can cause a new persistent deep ache in the affected compartment.  When using or stretching the muscles increased pain can happen along with muscle tightness.  The skin can feel tingling or burning and it may be visible to see bulging muscles. Numbness or paralysis are often late signs that an individual has compartment syndrome.
