Medial Collateral Ligament Injury (MCL): Anatomy, Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) Anatomy

The medial collateral ligament or MCL is a band of tissue running from the thigh and connecting to the lower part of the leg.  This ligament prevents the knee from being inward.  A medial collateral ligament injury is a tear of strain to the ligament.

Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) Injury Causes

Individuals who participate in sports with stop and go actions, and twisting actions such as football, skiing, soccer, and volleyball can be at high risk for a MCL injury.  A strong hit or force to the outside of the knee can also be another cause for a MCL tear.
