Soft tissue mobilization is used by a trained clinician to treat somatic dysfunction and accompanying pain and restriction of motion. It is primarily used as a manual therapy to relax muscles, reduce scar tissue, and stretch or lengthen fascia.

Soft tissue mobilization is commonly performed by physical therapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists, osteopathic, naturopathic, and chiropractors. These physicians are licensed health care professionals who specialize in assessment, treatment and management of soft tissue injuries.

How is Soft Tissue Mobilization Performed?

Soft tissue mobilization involves a number of techniques, including applying gentle pressure and stretching the affected tissue.  Some doctors and clinicians will use ergonomically designed tools to achieve this effect.  A clinician will also identify hot spots and determine the range of motion in your affected joints. From there, you’ll be advised on a course of action, which may include a number of therapy sessions.
