Lateral Epicondylitis – Tennis Elbow: Definition, Location, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

What is Lateral Epicondylitis?

Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is a painful overuse injury in the outer elbow. The elbow joint is composed of 3 bones, the upper arm bone (humerus) and the two forearm bones (radius and ulna). At the elbow joint, there are two bony bumps (part of the humerus bone) and they are called epicondyles.

Lateral Epicondylitis Location

There is a lateral one (on the outer side) and a medial one (on the inner side).  Tendons from the forearm muscles attach to the lateral epicondyle. The main forearm muscle involved is the extensor carpi radials brevis, which is responsible for extending the wrist.

Causes of Lateral Epicondylitis

Lateral epicondylitis, occurs when the tendons attaching to the lateral epicondyle become inflamed or damaged from overuse. Overuse can occur from racquet sports such as tennis, or professions involving repetitive elbow movements, such as painters, plumbers, mechanics, cooks, butchers, or carpenters.

Symptoms of Lateral Epicondylitis

Symptoms of lateral epicondylitis include:

  1. Pain/burning on outer elbow
  2. Weak grip strength
  3. Morning stiffness
  4. Pain during extension of the wrist
  5. Symptoms worsen with increased forearm activities
