What is Osgood Schlatter Disease?

Osgood Schlatter Disease occurs within adolescents, both boys and girls, and usually occurs in those individuals that play sports requiring a lot of bending, jumping, and running.  Osgood Schlatter disease pain can generally run from mild to severe depending on the severity and the level of activity of the individual.  With Osgood Schlatter Disease a child’s quadriceps may pull on the tendon that attaches the knee to the shin, this repeated stress can cause the tendon to pull away from the shinbone.  It is common for those with Osgood Shlatter Disease experience pain and swelling, and in some of individuals the bone may try to grow to close the gap between the tendon and the bone, causing a bony lump.

Osgood Schlatter Disease Risk Factors 

  1. Generally in adolescent males, but growing in women due to the increase in females playing sports
  2. Seen in males ages 13-14 and females age 11-12
  3. Sports that require a lot of bending, jumping, and hard running such as gymnastics, ballet, and soccer

Symptoms of Osgood Schlatter Disease

  1. Pain and swelling over the shine bone
  2. A lumpy growth over the shine bone 
  3. Leg or knee pain that gets worse with activity 
  4. Knee area is tender with pressure or gets worse with activity
