Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis involves irritation of the plantar fascia ligament. The plantar fascia ligament is on the bottom of the foot, and connects the heel with the front of the foot, supporting the foot’s arch. It absorbs the daily stresses and strains placed on our feet, but too much pressure can damage or tear the tissues. These tears cause the plantar fascia to become inflamed, painful, and stiff, especially around the heel. Plantar fasciitis affects approximately 2 million people each year.

Risk Factors for Plantar Fasciitis

Certain risk factors increase your odds of plantar fasciitis and include:

  • Overuse from long periods of standing, increased exercising, or obesity
  • Lifestyle with little exercise
  • Tight/stiff achilles tendon and/or calf muscle
  • Very high arches
  • Heel spurs

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Sharp heel or foot pain
  • Increased pain after long periods of rest, especially in the morning
  • Numbness, tingling, swelling, or radiating pain
  • Limited “up” motion at the ankle
