Soft Tissue Injury: Definition, Causes, Symptoms, Prevention & Treatment

What is Soft Tissue Injury?

Soft tissue injuries consist of bumps, bruises, minor tears in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. These injuries are very common and not life-threatening.

What Causes a Soft Tissue Injury?

Soft tissue injuries are usually caused by acute trauma. The onset could also be gradual, resulting from overuse (for example, tendonitis or bursitis).

Symptoms of a Soft Tissue Injury

Soft tissue injuries can cause mild to moderate swelling and discoloration. Typically, those with soft tissue injuries are able to continue with daily activities. Increased pain or inability to move the injured area might indicate a more severe injury is present, which will need specialized treatment.

Soft Tissue Injury Prevention

  1. Prevent Falls: While unforeseen incidents are unpredictable, being aware of surrounding areas can help prevent an accident.
  2. Build Muscle Strength: Muscle strength can be built with resistance training, without any pain.
  3. Wear Protective Gear: Wearing helmets, knee pads, elbow pad, and wrist pads while participating in activities, such as biclying, can help prevent injury.
  4. Proper Posture: Using proper posture and using ergonomically-correct equipmen. For example, using wrist support while working at a computer to ensure that wrist is not flexed or extended for long periods of time.
