What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune response affecting the small joints of the hands and feet.  This autoimmune response triggers the body to attack its own tissues including bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons causes overactivity of the synovium.  When the synovium is acting properly it provides lubrication to the joint allowing the bones to smoothly slide on top of each other.  Overactivity of the synovium causes inflammation and damage to the joint and surrounding supportive tissue.
