Soft Tissue Therapy: Definition, Uses & Treatment

What is Soft Tissue Therapy?

Soft tissue therapy generally uses a clinician’s hands to manipulate the body’s soft tissues to relieve muscle pain and spasms, and correct muscle imbalance.

Who uses Soft Tissue Therapy?

Physical therapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists, osteopathic, naturopathic, and chiropractors are among the practitioners that perform this type of therapy. These physicians are licensed health care professionals who specialize in the assessment, treatment, and management of soft tissue injuries.

What is Soft Tissue Therapy used for?

Soft tissue therapy is a broad-based term for the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body. Soft tissues include muscles, connective tissue/fascia, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and the joints.  Soft tissue therapy is designed to help alleviate soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscle over-use, and many chronic pain conditions.

Soft Tissue Treatment

Soft Tissue Therapy is usually precluded by assessments of posture, biomechanics, range of motion, and the nervous system, among other things. Soft tissue therapy may use massage, exercises, stretching, and other physical therapy techniques. There are a wide variety of soft tissue therapies that are usually tailored to the individual and their comfort levels. If the findings of an assessment suggest that the client has a condition that is beyond the scope of a practitioner’s skill-set, they will refer that client to the most appropriate healthcare professional.
