Osteopathy: Definition & Treatment
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is the treatment of bones, tissue, and muscles in the human body with use of physical manipulation and massage. Osteopathy is a non-invasive way to strengthen and treat the musculoskeletal framework of the body. An osteopathic physician’s aim is to positively affect the systems within the body.
What does Osteopathy Treat?
Osteopathy treats many different conditions:
- Huvudvärk
- Neck and back pain
- Heel/foot pain
- Ischias
- Benskenor
- Ledvärk
How does Osteopathy Work?
An osteopathic practitioner will look at the body as a whole, usually checking the framework of the body to for misalignments. This practice believes that disease or illness is due to problems with the spine. Nerves from the spine connect to every organ in the body and may send abnormal signals to other parts of the body.
During treatment, the practitioner will begin by looking at your posture, spine, and balance. They will continue with checking your joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and end by manually manipulating your back, legs, or arms.
