What is Astym?

ASTYM is a soft tissue mobilization technique or Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) that focuses primarily on removing the scar tissue in the body and regenerate the growth of healthy tissue. ASTYM uses a series of tools to glide over the skin in order to push out, break away, and remove the scar tissue.  By breaking up the tissue their goal is to start the healing process over  (tramatizing the healthy tissue and starting the inflammation stage all over again) in hopes that the body will rebuild soft tissue properly. ASTYM treats tendinopathies, scar tissue, and soft tissue dysfunctions.

How uses Astym therapy?

The treatment can range from causing no pain to being some what uncomfortable and has the potential to leave bruising.  ASTYM certifies physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and athletic trainers.

Is Astym therapy effective?

Based on  several research studies Astym or IASTM does not provide a long-term pain reduction or improve patient quality of life.
