What is Manual Therapy?
Manual therapy is a hands-on therapy that treats musculoskeletal pain and disabilities through the kneading and manipulation of the muscles. Manual therapy is also used to relax any tense or tight muscles.
Who uses Manual Therapy?
Manual therapy is primarily used by physical therapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors and osteopathic physicians.
How is manual therapy used?
There are many different styles of manual therapy, and the styles used during your treatment will depend on your specific condition. During your treatment, your clinician will palpate the area of concern and release the tension and tightness in order to relieve the pain.
Manual Therapy Types
There are three main forms of manual therapy:
- Manipulation –Manipulation involves twisting the neck or back to the end of its normal range, then giving a sudden thrust to release the pressure in joint.
- Mobilization – Mobilization is comprised of an array of skilled passive movements to the joint complex that are applied at varying speeds and amplitudes.
- Massage – Massage is the repetitive rubbing or kneading of myofascial tissue.
