Lupus: Definition, Statistics, Symptoms & Treatment
What is Lupus?
Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system malfunctions and attacks the body’s normal, healthy tissue. This causes inflammation, pain, and damage to occur in various parts and systems of the body. The joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs are all vulnerable to being affected by lupus.
Lupus Statistics
Lupus affects nearly 1.5 million Americans, with more than 16,000 new cases being reported annually. There are four main types of lupus—systemic, discoid, drug-induced, and neonatal- and many other less common types as well. Periods of flare-ups are common where symptoms are worsened, and they are followed by periods of remission where symptoms are lessened.
